Sam & Dave are best known for their hits “Hold On, I’m Comin'” and “Soul Man” (both of which, interestingly, were cowritten by Isaac Hayes-I did not know that!), and those are definitely the show pieces of this collection. They just look like they are pouring everything they have into the music, and that comes through on this album as well. Not too long ago I watching PBS and saw The 1967 Stax/Volt Revue-Norway, which featured a few songs from Sam & Dave, and man, they tore it up live! I can’t think of anyone today other than perhaps Janelle Monae or Prince who performs like this any more.
